It’s not hard to imagine that a little girl named Leona is pretty proud of her mom. Though she had “an unexpected arrival and departure” nine years ago, Leona left her mother, Perrin White, forever changed. Now, White is sharing her little lion with the world, brought to the page in a children’s book “Leona Learns to Breathe,” beautifully illustrated by artist Kate Furman.
“I have so much, so much love just to share her, because she is the reason I have the courage to do all these big, brave things that I never even thought were possible,” White said long before the book came to life. “So essentially, I think, would this be good for my younger self? Did my younger self need this? Or would it make Leona proud to call me her mom?”
In this latest project from White, the answers to all those questions are a resounding “yes.” The book helps kids (and their grownups) mindfully consider their breath and the power and peace it can bring. That stems from White’s day job in myofunctional and speech therapy, as well as breathwork and yoga – all combining in a holistic elevation of the breath. All of us can learn to breathe better (really!) and this lovely book is the perfect introduction for little ones.
And with it, Leona roars.
